Canada’s Battles
Canada’s efforts to stop the war impacted the world. Canada’s first major battle was in Belgium on April.22, 1915. Poison gas was first used in this battle. The gas was very toxic and devastated groups of soldiers in an instant. However, the Battle of the Somme was the most disastrous and occurred in July, 1916. 90% of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was either killed or wounded. This is a significant amount of people killed, however, Newfoundland was its own force. Instead, Canada would shine in its most crucial battle, the battle of Vimy Ridge. Canada advanced farther than any other force in the war. The forces were able to capture the Ridge, but also captured most ground, guns, and prisoners than all previous years Canada was in the war. This show the importance of Canada throughout the entire war.
